Lesson 2.2

Spot check. What should I know about the kite spot?

Introduction

Before you launch your kite and go on the water, it is important to understand the kitesurfing spot well. In this article we share tips and resources. This will help you learn everything about your kitesurfing spot. This prevents unnecessary dangerous situations!

What is important to know?

Before you go kitesurfing at a new spot, there are some important aspects you should pay attention to:

  1. Wind direction: Always check the wind direction before going on the water. Kitesurfing requires a constant and stable wind. Make sure that the wind direction is suitable for the spot where you want to kitesurf. Kitesurfing with offshore wind is extremely dangerous and not recommended!

  2. Depth: Know the depth of the water at the kitesurfing spot. For beginners, it is often better to kitesurf in spots with shallow water, as this increases safety and makes it easier to get back up after a fall. On the other hand, water that is too shallow is dangerous for both beginners (getting stuck in the sand with your board) and advanced users (shallow landing after a jump can lead to injuries).

  3. Launch space: Make sure there is enough space to safely launch and land your kite. Check for any obstacles, such as trees, rocks or buildings, that could hinder your take-off or landing. Also check that there are no obstacles upwind of you, as these cause unreliable and gusty winds.

  4. Prohibited areas: Inform yourself about any prohibited areas at the kitesurfing spot. Some spots have specific rules and restrictions, such as areas reserved for swimmers or other water sports. Please respect these rules to avoid conflicts and ensure everyone's safety.

Understanding these important aspects before kitesurfing will help you make the right decisions and ensure safety. Always be alert and respect the environment in which you kitesurf, after all, we are all nature lovers!
